The Michigan Senate has adopted a resolution introduced by Sen. Michael Webber to acknowledge the significance of Diwali, an annual festival celebrated by many communities in Michigan and around the world.

“Diwali is a special time celebrated by many of our neighbors throughout Metro Detroit and across Michigan. It brings me joy to take time to recognize this wonderful festival in the Michigan Senate,” said Webber, R-Rochester Hills. “Diwali reminds us of an important theme that is shared by many of our faith traditions — light triumphs over darkness and good conquers evil. Hope is universal.”

Members of Metro Detroit’s Indian community attended the event at the state Capitol for this recognition. The resolution, known as Senate Resolution 80, was passed unanimously by voice vote.

Senator Webber has also proposed Senate Bill 17, which would establish Diwali as an official state holiday in Michigan. This bill is currently under review by the Senate Committee on Regulatory Affairs.

Diwali, sometimes referred to as the “festival of lights,” comes from a Sanskrit word meaning “row of lamps.” The celebration emphasizes themes such as togetherness, family, charitable giving, and service. It is observed by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, and some Buddhists worldwide.

The resolution states: “Michigan remains resolute in its commitment to fostering diversity of experience and religious acceptance. We recognize the Diwali message of tolerance, compassion, and acceptance of others, which resonates with the ideals of the American spirit.”
