The Detroit Red Wings lost their first game of the 2025-26 preseason, falling 3-2 to the Pittsburgh Penguins at PPG Paints Arena on Friday night.
Goaltender John Gibson started for Detroit, making 13 saves on 14 shots before prospect Michal Postava entered and stopped four of six attempts. The Red Wings took an early lead when John Leonard scored at 13:38 in the first period, assisted by Alexandre Doucet. Leonard added his second goal late in the opening frame during a power play after working with William Wallinder and Nate Danielson at Pittsburgh’s blue line.
The Penguins responded by scoring three consecutive goals. Connor Dewar began the comeback with a backhand goal early in the second period. In the third, former Red Wing Robby Fabbri tied the game with a wrist shot, and Phil Tomasino secured the win for Pittsburgh by scoring on a power play shortly afterward.
Detroit will continue its preseason schedule with a game against the Buffalo Sabres at KeyBank Center on Saturday afternoon.
