Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, who represents Michigan’s 12th district in the U.S. Congress, has recently used her social media platform to address a range of policy issues including healthcare costs, homelessness, and immigration enforcement.
On September 19, 2025, Tlaib posted about the potential impact of expiring Affordable Care Act tax credits on her constituents: "Without extending the ACA tax credits, a family of four in the 12th District making $60,000 a year could see their premiums increase by $2,400. This is unacceptable. We cannot wait until December. We must act now."
The following day, she commented on approaches to addressing social challenges in Washington D.C., stating: "You can’t police away homelessness.
You can’t police away a mental health crisis.
You can’t police away poverty.
D.C. residents deserve better." (September 20, 2025).
Later that same day, Tlaib drew attention to the case of Willian Gimenez and his treatment by immigration authorities: "Willian Gimenez was targeted by ICE for standing up for the rights of his fellow immigrants in a lawsuit against police abuses. He was abducted, his whereabouts unknown for days, and now is being held miles away in a for-profit, maximum-security prison in Michigan. Free Willian!" (September 20, 2025).
Tlaib has served as U.S. Representative for Michigan’s 12th District since 2019 after replacing Brenda Jones and previously held office in the Michigan House of Representatives from 2009 to 2014. She was born in Detroit in 1976 and continues to reside there. Tlaib earned her undergraduate degree from Wayne State University and holds a law degree from Thomas M. Cooley Law School.
