The Detroit Regional Chamber has expressed concern about the leadership situation at Wayne State University, following reports that President Kimberly Espy may be leaving her position. Espy began her tenure at Wayne State in 2023 and is reportedly facing efforts from members of the university’s board to remove her.

In a statement released Friday, Sandy K. Baruah, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Detroit Regional Chamber, addressed the issue of frequent changes in university leadership across Michigan. He pointed out that Michigan State University has experienced multiple interim and permanent presidents since Lou Anna K. Simon stepped down in 2018.

Baruah stated: "Michigan’s higher education institutions are one of the state’s greatest assets, driving innovation, talent attraction and economic growth."

The chamber's call for stability comes as universities play a key role in supporting economic development and attracting skilled workers to Michigan.
