Detroit City Football Club suffered a 4-0 defeat against New Mexico United in Albuquerque on Thursday night. The result saw Detroit City drop three points as New Mexico scored twice in each half.
Head coach Danny Dichio made several changes to the starting lineup, including Carlos Herrera’s first start in goal since July 6. Defenders Devon Amoo-Mensah, Stephen Carroll, and Michael Bryant formed the back line. The midfield featured Kobe Hernandez-Foster, Jay Chapman, Isaiah LeFlore, Matt Sheldon, and Abdoulaye Diop. Jordan Adebayo-Smith and Jeciel Cedeño started up front.
Detroit City began aggressively, with Adebayo-Smith nearly scoring early before New Mexico’s goalkeeper pushed his shot out for a corner. However, New Mexico responded quickly. In the fifth minute, Zico Bailey scored from beyond midfield after catching Herrera off his line.
New Mexico doubled their lead in the 20th minute when Christopher Gloster found the top corner from inside the box. Shortly after the restart, Adebayo-Smith was fouled outside the box by New Mexico keeper Alex Tambakis, who received a yellow card.
Despite both teams’ efforts early on, New Mexico took control as Detroit City struggled to create further chances. At halftime, Dichio brought on Ryan Williams and Haruki Yamazaki for Jay Chapman and Abdoulaye Diop to boost attacking options.
Williams received Detroit’s first yellow card of the match in the 54th minute for a late tackle. As Detroit tried to push forward in the second half, further substitutions were made: Sebastian Guenzatti and Alex Villanueva entered for Matt Sheldon and Isaiah LeFlore in the 64th minute.
New Mexico extended their lead to 3-0 in the 69th minute when Dayonn Harris crossed for Greg Hurst to head home. Shane Wiedt replaced Stephen Carroll in defense for Detroit’s final substitution of the night.
Guenzatti had an opportunity to reduce the deficit late but his header was saved by New Mexico’s goalkeeper. Michael Bryant picked up Detroit’s second yellow card during stoppage time for a tactical foul.
In added time, Valentin Noël scored New Mexico’s fourth goal following a turnover that led to a counterattack.
After this loss, Detroit City remains sixth in the Eastern Conference with 32 points—level with Hartford Athletic (fifth place) and just one point ahead of Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC (seventh place).
Detroit City will return home to Keyworth Stadium on September 20th against Lexington SC as they begin a four-match homestand that concludes their regular season home schedule. Tickets are available at www.detcityfc.com/tickets.
