Detroit City FC played to a 1-1 draw against North Carolina FC on Friday night in Cary, North Carolina. The match saw North Carolina control the early stages before Detroit City responded in the second half.

Head coach Danny Dichio made two changes to his starting lineup from the previous win over Indy Eleven. Jay Champion and Darren Smith started in place of Connor Rutz and Sebastián Guenzatti. Carlos Saldaña remained in goal, with Devon Amoo-Mensah, Shane Wiedt, Michael Bryant, and Matt Sheldon forming the defense. The midfield included Chapman, Kobe Hernandez-Foster, Alex Villanueva, and Abdoulaye Diop. Smith partnered with Ates Diouf up front.

North Carolina took an early lead in the 23rd minute when Evan Conway set up Pedro Dolabella for a shot from outside the box that found the bottom left corner.

Detroit City's first significant chance came during first-half stoppage time when Matt Sheldon's effort forced a save from North Carolina's goalkeeper. Shortly after, Darren Smith nearly equalized but hit the post.

At halftime, Detroit City made tactical adjustments by bringing on Haruki Yamazaki and Ryan Williams for Shane Wiedt and Jay Chapman. Both teams played defensively at the start of the second half until Ates Diouf narrowly missed with a shot in the 61st minute.

In the 62nd minute, Jeciel Cedeño replaced Abdoulaye Diop for Detroit City. Moments later, Kobe Hernandez-Foster delivered a pass to Darren Smith who scored from inside the box to tie the game at 1-1. This marked Smith’s first goal since May.

Further substitutions followed as Jordan Adebayo-Smith entered for Ates Diouf in what was his longest appearance since June 7th at Pittsburgh Riverhounds.

North Carolina threatened late when Ahmad Al-Qaq’s header required a strong save from Saldaña in the 86th minute. Sebastián Guenzatti came on for Alex Villanueva as Detroit’s final substitution.

After five minutes of added time, neither team managed another goal and both sides shared points. The result leaves Detroit City sixth and North Carolina third in Eastern Conference standings.

Detroit City will next play Tampa Bay Rowdies at Keyworth Stadium on August 23rd. Tickets are available through their official website: https://www.detcityfc.com/tickets
