This week, the Detroit Regional Chamber's Tax Policy Committee was briefed by State Treasurer Rachael Eubanks on Michigan's economic and fiscal outlook.
Treasurer Eubanks noted that Michigan's economy is showing a strong recovery. Employment levels have surpassed those before the pandemic, and there is a robust labor force participation rate. The state's important automotive sector continues to see strong production and profits.
Despite these positive signs, Treasurer Eubanks pointed out potential challenges. She mentioned evolving federal tariff policies that might lead to a 1.8% decline in domestic vehicle production and could result in an estimated 13,000 job losses in Michigan. The briefing also highlighted the state's budget concerns, with recent tax policy changes expected to reduce revenues by over $1.4 billion in Fiscal Year 2025.
These direct discussions with state leaders provide Chamber members with essential information to navigate the economic landscape. The Chamber plans to continue using these opportunities to advocate for policies that enhance Michigan's competitiveness.
