Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, who represents Michigan’s 12th district in the U.S. Congress, has recently posted a series of statements on social media addressing ongoing violence in Syria and criticizing both U.S. fiscal priorities and Israeli military actions.

On July 17, 2025, Tlaib wrote, "The Israeli government's rogue bombing of Syria must end. The same occupying power that ethnically cleansed Syrian Druze from the Golan is no protector." In a subsequent post on the same day, she addressed the situation within Syria: "All Syrians deserve real safety. The Syrian government must end the violence, hold perpetrators accountable, and commit to an inclusive transition that protects all of Syria's diverse communities."

Later that evening, Tlaib turned her attention to domestic policy and Congressional spending priorities: "Congress will give billionaires and corporations trillions of $$$ in tax breaks. They will invest trillions in war and death. But tell us we can't keep children out of poverty and homelessness? This is what Dr. MLK called 'spiritual death.'"

Tlaib has represented Michigan’s 12th District since 2019 after replacing Brenda Jones in Congress. Before serving at the federal level, she was a member of the Michigan House of Representatives from 2009 to 2014. Born in Detroit in 1976, Tlaib continues to reside there today. She earned her BA from Wayne State University in 1998 and later received a JD from Thomas M. Cooley Law School in 2004.
