Detroit City FC faced a challenging return to league play, suffering a 2-0 defeat against Oakland Roots SC on Saturday night in Oakland, California. The match remained scoreless at halftime, but Oakland secured the lead with a goal in the 55th minute and sealed their victory with another late in the game.

Danny Dichio made adjustments to Detroit's lineup following their previous match against Hartford. Carlos Herrara started as goalkeeper, while Matt Sheldon replaced Stephen Carroll on defense. Devon Amoo-Mensah, Shane Wiedt, and Michael Bryant completed the back line. The midfield featured Ryan Williams, Abdoulaye Diop, Alex Villanueva, Jeciel Cedeño, and Connor Rutz. Darren Smith was positioned as the central striker.

Oakland controlled possession early on, making it difficult for Detroit City to launch an effective attack. Despite this pressure, Detroit City's defense held strong initially and prevented any shots from Oakland during the first fifteen minutes.

Matt Sheldon nearly scored for Detroit in the 17th minute when he managed a shot amidst two defenders but narrowly missed the target. Wolfgang Prentice of Oakland received a yellow card in the 35th minute for a tackle on Sheldon. Ali Elmasnaouy also saw yellow shortly after for fouling Jeciel Cedeño.

Detroit City introduced Sebastián Guenzatti at halftime in place of Connor Rutz. However, Panos Armenakas broke the deadlock for Oakland with a long-range effort that found its mark in the 55th minute.

In an attempt to equalize, Detroit made further substitutions by bringing Ates Diouf and Jay Chapman into play for Darren Smith and Ryan Williams respectively in the 66th minute. Haruki Yamazaki replaced Abdoulaye Diop in the 74th minute, followed by Marcello Polisi entering for Jeciel Cedeño five minutes later.

The final blow came when a free kick led to an own goal off Marcello Polisi's deflection in the 86th minute, securing Oakland's win.

This loss marks Detroit City's fourth defeat out of their last five USL Championship matches. They will next host Hartford Athletic at Keyworth Stadium on July 12 as they begin a three-game home stand. Tickets are available through their official website.
