The Detroit Red Wings have announced the signing of defenseman Antti Tuomisto to a one-year, two-way contract extension. Tuomisto, 24, played the entire 2024-25 season with the Grand Rapids Griffins in the American Hockey League (AHL), where he led the team's defensemen in assists, points, penalty minutes, and shots over 67 regular-season games. He also participated in two Calder Cup Playoff games with the Griffins.
In the previous season, Tuomisto recorded 17 points and a plus-four rating in 50 regular-season games with the Griffins and contributed one assist in nine postseason contests. Additionally, he logged six points and a plus-five rating over five games with the ECHL's Toledo Walleye during that period.
Tuomisto was selected by the Red Wings as their second-round pick (35th overall) in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft. He made his professional debut in Finland's Liiga with TPS during the 2022-23 season, accumulating 20 points and 20 penalty minutes across 60 regular-season games.
Before turning professional, Tuomisto spent two seasons at the University of Denver from 2020 to 2022. During his time there, he collected 20 points and helped lead his team to an NCAA Division I championship alongside fellow Red Wings prospects Shai Buium and Carter Mazur.
Tuomisto's early career included playing for Ässät’s under-20 squad in Finland’s top junior league during the entire 2019-20 season. He earned accolades such as the Teemu Selänne Award for Player of the Year and Reijo Ruotsalainen Award for Best Defenseman after scoring significant points throughout his tenure with various age-level teams.
Internationally, Tuomisto represented Finland at several tournaments including the IIHF World Under-18 Championship in 2019 and World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in 2017.
