Detroit City Football Club faced a challenging match as they were defeated by Portland Hearts of Pine with a score of 4-2 in the USL Jägermeister Cup's second group stage match. Despite efforts to narrow the gap, Detroit City was unable to overcome Portland's persistent offense.
Head Coach Danny Dichio made significant changes to the lineup from their previous game at Keyworth Stadium. Carlos Saldaña took over goalkeeping duties from Carlos Herrera, while Stephen Carroll and Haruki Yamazaki returned to the defense. Ates Diouf and Connor Rutz were added to the attack.
Portland capitalized on an early opportunity, with Nathaniel James assisting Azaad Liadi for a goal in the fifth minute. Detroit controlled possession but struggled offensively, with their first real chance coming from Jeciel Cedeño's header in the 23rd minute. Portland extended their lead when Ollie Wright scored following another turnover by Detroit.
In response, Detroit City made tactical changes after halftime, introducing Sebastián Guenzatti, Ben Morris, and Shane Wiedt. This adjustment paid off when Guenzatti scored in the 52nd minute with an assist from Morris.
Despite Detroit's attempts to equalize, Portland regained control and increased their lead through Walter Varela's goal in the 79th minute. Although Darren Smith managed to score for Detroit shortly after, a late goal by Mo Mohamed secured Portland's victory.
The defeat places Detroit fourth in Group 4 of the tournament. They will face Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC next weekend before returning home on June 21st against The Miami FC at Keyworth Stadium.
