Amadeus Lombardi, a forward prospect for the Grand Rapids Griffins in the American Hockey League, overcame an upper-body injury during the 2024-25 season. The injury sidelined him from December 6 to February 15. Upon his return, Lombardi quickly regained his form and made significant contributions to his team.
“Mentally, getting through all of that was pretty tough,” Lombardi told DetroitRedWings.com. “I’ve never been through an injury like that before, missing that much time, so that was something I had to learn. It was a good experience, and I did well with our [medical] staff."
Lombardi expressed gratitude towards the medical staff for their support during his recovery. "They also did a really good job with me, so that I was able to feel ready and come back," he said. Despite the challenges of being away from his team while they were on the road, Lombardi felt satisfied with his strong return.
In just 44 regular-season games, Lombardi tied for third on the Griffins in goals with 19 and ranked fourth in points with 40. He also matched his AHL-career high by recording 21 assists. Reflecting on his performance, Lombardi noted the importance of confidence and teamwork in achieving success.
“There were some games last year that I knew if I pushed a little harder and then if I had a big summer, I would be able to have a big year,” he said. In addition to regular-season play, Lombardi contributed two points in three Calder Cup Playoff games.
Lombardi emphasized the supportive culture within the Griffins' dressing room as crucial for navigating his second full AHL season. “We’re all close and we all hang out," he explained. The camaraderie among teammates extended beyond hockey activities and fostered better on-ice chemistry.
As a player selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the fourth round of the 2022 NHL Entry Draft, Lombardi continues to seek guidance from more experienced players within the organization. “I’m a bit of a hockey nerd," he admitted. "Recently, I’ve been focusing a lot on face-offs and the little things that I can do to get every advantage that I can."
Lombardi's determination is fueled by conversations with veteran players about their NHL experiences. "It obviously motivates you," he said about these discussions.
