For two decades, Tammy Carnrike has been a key figure in the leadership of the Detroit Region, serving as the Chief Operating Officer of the Chamber. As she prepares to move on to new endeavors, Carnrike reflects on her experiences and contributions.

Carnrike highlights several memorable moments from her tenure at the Mackinac Policy Conference. "Twenty years makes it difficult to narrow it down," she says, noting the event's growth and national reputation. She recalls adapting to virtual formats during COVID-19 and a notable session with former House Speaker John Boehner where bloody marys were served on stage.

Reflecting on her proudest achievements, Carnrike cites being nominated by U.S. Army TACOM as Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army—the first woman in Michigan to hold this position—and traveling to the Pentagon for her swearing-in. This role allowed her to engage with military leaders and learn about innovations in defense.

Carnrike also takes pride in mentoring Chamber staff who have excelled or moved on to other opportunities. "It’s amazing to watch them continue to grow and thrive throughout the region," she notes.

When asked about potential contributions to Michigan's future, Carnrike emphasizes strengthening its defense industry. "Making this state a national leader in the defense industry would be huge," she asserts, advocating for public-private partnerships and strategic investments.

Success in her COO role has hinged on strong relationships with government leaders across various levels. "The ability for the business community to work collaboratively with government leaders is essential," Carnrike explains.

As for what lies ahead, Carnrike remains open-minded: "I am waiting to see what comes next." She draws inspiration from women reimagining their careers after significant accomplishments.

Reflecting on influential leadership moments over 20 years, Carnrike praises regional business leaders' service and collaborative efforts that helped Detroit emerge from bankruptcy. She also acknowledges Arn Tellem and Tom Gores' decision to relocate the Pistons downtown as pivotal leadership actions.

Lastly, she commends Sandy Baruah, CEO of the Chamber: "It has been an honor to work side by side with a great leader."
