The Michigan Senate has approved a resolution put forth by Senator Ruth Johnson to promote motorcycle safety awareness across the state. This initiative, designated as Senate Resolution 44, aims to highlight the importance of safety for motorcyclists and other road users during May 2025.
Senator Johnson, representing Holly, emphasized the significance of this resolution given the large number of registered motorcycles and licensed operators in Michigan. "Michigan has nearly 250,000 registered motorcycles and more than 610,000 people who have operator licenses with a motorcycle endorsement," she stated. With warmer weather encouraging more motorcyclists onto the roads, Johnson sees this as an opportune moment to focus on safety measures.
Johnson highlighted the need for both motorcyclists and other drivers to practice vigilance. "The disproportionate number of motorcycle fatalities make it vitally important to encourage motorcyclists to understand and practice the highest degree of safety. It’s also important for other drivers to be alert for motorcyclists on the road. Look twice to save a life," she said.
The resolution encourages motorcycle operators to wear protective gear, perform regular maintenance checks as per their owner’s manual, adhere strictly to traffic laws, and employ advanced operating techniques for enhanced safety. Additionally, it serves as a reminder for car and truck drivers about the presence of motorcyclists on highways.
Members of ABATE (American Bikers Aiming Toward Education) of Michigan supported Johnson at the Capitol during this announcement. ABATE is a nonprofit organization focused on advocating for motorcyclist rights and promoting safe riding practices throughout Michigan.
