On April 20, Oakland County Executive David Coulter, Wayne County Executive Warren Evans, and Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel discussed major issues impacting Southeast Michigan during a segment on Flashpoint. The conversation addressed topics such as transportation, workforce development, environmental concerns, and the implications of federal funding cuts on local nonprofits, highlighting the potential for collaborative efforts among the counties.

Oakland County's initiatives were underscored by Executive David Coulter. The "Oakland 80" program aims to ensure that 80% of adult residents hold some form of post-secondary degree or certification. Coulter expressed particular enthusiasm for reaching a 70% milestone within the year. Additionally, Oakland County is focused on providing training and employment opportunities for individuals involved in the criminal justice system.

Wayne County, under the leadership of Executive Warren Evans, is experiencing population growth, which he described as a positive indicator. The county has allocated $20 million to the "Wayne Link" job training program designed to align college curricula with employer demands. Evans also noted the county's efforts to assess and prepare for the impact of federal funding cuts on nonprofits, while expanding healthcare programs and medical debt assistance.

Macomb County, led by Executive Mark Hackel, is actively increasing its workforce capabilities. With 450,000 individuals in the workforce and 44,000 job vacancies, the county collaborates with community partners and educational institutions like the Macomb Community College to attract talent to the region. Hackel is particularly eager about the county's mental health and substance use initiatives at the Macomb County Jail.

These executives will participate in the "Meet Southeast Michigan’s County Leaders" event on April 30, hosted by the Detroit Regional Chamber. This event, featuring a moderated discussion with CBS Detroit and Detroit Free Press’ Carol Cain, will offer attendees the opportunity to inquire about public policy issues and the executives' strategies for regional collaboration.

Participants can engage in a live Q&A session by submitting questions ahead of the event and can share their perspectives on regional challenges through an online poll using Slido, with the access code #2292422.
