President Donald Trump has enacted Executive Order 14156, designed to expedite Enbridge's permit process for the renovation of Line 5. The executive order allows Enbridge to move forward with constructing an encapsulated pipeline, a development stalled for five years due to legal challenges.

Initially approved in 2018 by then-Governor Rick Snyder, Line 5 is critical energy infrastructure for North America. It supplies Michigan with essential light crude and propane from Canada. The continuation of this pipeline underscores the mutual economic reliance between the United States and Canada.

The Detroit Regional Chamber's January 2025 Michigan Voter Poll found that 68% of Michigan voters see Canada as a vital economic partner. "Good faith and willingness to work with Michigan's neighbor promotes economic growth and jobs here in Michigan, therefore, the Trump administration needs to continue to foster this relationship."
