Detroit City FC began their 2025 USL Championship season with a 2-0 victory over Miami FC. Michael Bryant scored the first goal in the 32nd minute, and Connor Rutz secured the win with a second goal in the 87th minute.

Danny Dichio’s starting lineup included four new players: Jay Chapman, Marcello Polisi, Darren Smith, and Shane Wiedt. Alongside them were Carlos Saldaña, Alex Villanueva, Stephen Carroll, Michael Bryant, Jeciel Cedeño, Rhys Williams, and Ben Morris.

Miami started aggressively but failed to capitalize on early opportunities. Detroit's first significant chance came in the 14th minute when Jay Chapman forced a save from Miami's goalkeeper. The match saw several yellow cards issued for both teams due to its physical nature.

In the 32nd minute, Detroit City took advantage of a corner kick as Jeciel Cedeño delivered a ball into the box that Michael Bryant headed into the net. Miami was reduced to ten men after Francisco Bonfiglio received a red card just before halftime.

During the second half, Detroit maintained control of possession against a defensively positioned Miami team. Substitutions included Morey Doner and Sebastian Guenzatti entering in the 64th minute and Connor Rutz and Alassane Diouf coming on in the 76th minute.

Connor Rutz capitalized on an opportunity in the 87th minute to score an insurance goal for Detroit City after Rhys Williams' shot was blocked by Miami's keeper. Matt Sheldon was brought on late in the game as Detroit sealed their first win of the season.

Goalkeeper Carlos Saldaña achieved his first clean sheet of 2025 and sixth overall for Detroit City FC. The team will face Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC next week before hosting Birmingham Legion FC on March 22 at home.
