Detroit City FC is set to begin its 2025 USL Championship season on the road against Miami FC this Saturday. The match will take place at South Dade Kia Field in Pitbull Stadium, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. EST. Fans can watch the game live on ESPN+ or locally on CW Detroit 50 (WKBD-TV).
Last season, Detroit City FC had a record-setting campaign with 15 wins, 11 draws, and eight losses, finishing third in the Eastern Conference. Their playoff run ended in the first round against the Tampa Bay Rowdies after a penalty shootout.
The club has seen several changes during the offseason. Notable departures include Maxi Rodriguez, who won the 2024 Black Arrow Award, and Nate Steinwascher, who retired from professional soccer. New players joining Detroit City FC include goalkeeper Carlos Herrera; defenders Morey Doner and Shane Wiedt; midfielders Jay Chapman, Marcello Polisi, and Haruki Yamazaki; as well as forwards Ates Diouf, Sebastián Guenzatti, and Darren Smith.
Miami FC is looking to improve after finishing last in the USL Championship with just 11 points last season. Argentinian manager Gastόn Maddoni has been hired to lead the team forward. New signings for Miami include former MLS midfielder Sebastián Blanco, Lucas Melano, and former MLS goalkeeper Bill Hamid.
In their encounters last season, Detroit City FC defeated Miami FC twice—first with a 4-0 victory in June featuring goals from Rhys Williams, Michael Bryant, and Maxi Rodriguez; then again with a 3-0 win in October where Rhys Williams and Laurent Kissiedou scored before Nate Steinwasher converted a penalty in stoppage time.
After facing Miami FC, Detroit City will travel next week to play against Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC—the winners of the 2024 USL Championship. The team's first home game of the season will be on March 22 against Birmingham Legion FC at 4:00 p.m., with tickets available at www.detcityfc.com/tickets.
