The Detroit Red Wings missed an opportunity to secure two points as they fell to the Minnesota Wild in a 4-3 overtime loss at Little Caesars Arena. Despite holding a two-goal lead, the Red Wings were unable to maintain their advantage.
Detroit's goalie Cam Talbot made 35 saves, while Minnesota's Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 27 shots. Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin contributed with a power-play goal and an assist, marking his 14th multi-point game of the season. "It was a tight game," Larkin stated. He noted the team's failure to capitalize on late-game power plays and emphasized the need to score in such situations.
Andrew Copp opened scoring for Detroit by assisting Alex DeBrincat, who netted his team-leading 25th goal of the season. This play marked Copp's 300th career NHL point during his 700th game. The Red Wings were outshot in the first period but maintained their lead thanks to Talbot's key save.
Larkin extended Detroit’s lead in the second period after video review confirmed his goal, assisted by Lucas Raymond. Larkin's tally was also his 13th power-play goal of the season, tying him with other league leaders.
Minnesota responded with Vinnie Hinostroza’s power-play goal, cutting Detroit’s lead to one before Copp left due to injury. "I think they’re looking at him now," said head coach Todd McLellan, expressing doubt about Copp’s availability for the next game.
Raymond scored early in the third period with assists from Larkin and Patrick Kane, but goals from Matt Boldy and Marcus Foligno brought Minnesota back into contention. In overtime, Marco Rossi scored after exiting the penalty box, securing victory for Minnesota.
"I think today was a real strange game," McLellan commented postgame. He expressed disappointment over losing a point but acknowledged contributions from Larkin and Raymond despite uncertainties about their stamina.
Reflecting on his performance after participating in the 4 Nations Face-Off, Larkin remarked on feeling fatigued towards the end of the game but recognized missed opportunities as frustrating factors. Looking ahead, he anticipated reviewing video footage to address shortcomings before facing Anaheim Ducks next.
