Small businesses play a crucial role in Michigan's local communities, contributing to economic growth and the vitality of downtown areas. To support these enterprises, the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) offers the Match on Main assistance program. This reimbursement grant is designed to help new and expanding place-based businesses succeed.

Match on Main provides eligible businesses with up to $25,000 in funding. The funds are awarded through local governmental or community organizations such as downtown development authorities or community development organizations. This approach ensures that businesses receive necessary support while aligning with broader community revitalization efforts.

The program targets businesses in Redevelopment Ready Communities (RRC) and Michigan Main Street (MMS) districts. These communities have shown a strong commitment to fostering small business success through technical assistance, training, and education. Applicants must be located within Essentials or Certified Redevelopment Ready Communities or Select or Master Level Michigan Main Street Communities. By focusing on these areas, the MEDC aims to support business growth in locations with robust local resources.

Eligible applicants can nominate up to two businesses, but only one business per community will be awarded. Businesses must collaborate closely with their local downtown or community organization to apply. Applications opened on January 20, 2025, and will close on April 7, 2025.

Since its inception in 2019, Match on Main has had a significant impact: "$4.5 million in funding provided," "91% of funded businesses are still operating successfully," "$17 million in private investment leveraged," and "$58,200 average annual revenue increase per awarded business."

The program aligns with the MEDC’s mission to develop attractive, thriving places across Michigan by supporting small businesses. Match on Main strengthens local economies, creates jobs, and enhances the vibrancy of Michigan’s downtown areas.

For business owners looking to expand or entrepreneurs seeking a solid foundation, Match on Main presents an opportunity worth considering if they are in an eligible community.
