The Detroit Red Wings have assigned goaltender Sebastian Cossa to the Grand Rapids Griffins, their American Hockey League affiliate. Cossa, 22, made his NHL debut on December 9 against the Buffalo Sabres. In this game, he stopped 12 of 14 shots in relief and successfully defended two out of three shootout attempts. He is noted for being the first goaltender in NHL history to win his debut via a shootout while playing in relief.
In the current AHL season with the Griffins, Cossa has achieved a record of 9-4-1, along with a goals-against average (GAA) of 2.21 and a save percentage of .925 over 14 appearances. During the previous season, he played entirely with the Griffins, achieving a record of 22-9-9, a GAA of 2.41, and a save percentage of .913 across 40 regular-season games. Additionally, he helped lead the team to the Central Division Finals during the Calder Cup Playoffs with a playoff record of 5-4.
Cossa was selected by the Red Wings in the first round (15th overall) of the 2021 NHL Entry Draft. Throughout his time with the Griffins in AHL play, he has compiled a record of 32-14-10, with a GAA of 2.49 and a save percentage of .911 over 57 games. In his earlier career during the 2022-23 season with ECHL's Toledo Walleye, Cossa recorded a record of 26-16-4.
Before turning professional, Cossa spent three seasons with WHL’s Edmonton Oil Kings from 2019 to 2022. His tenure there included leading his team to a WHL championship in 2022 and earning First All-Star Team honors in their division.
Internationally, Cossa represented Canada at various levels including winning gold at the IIHF World Junior Championship in 2022.
