Detroit City Football Club has announced the acquisition of defender Morey Doner from Monterey Bay FC. The terms of the transfer fee remain undisclosed, but Doner has signed a two-year contract with Detroit City FC, extending through the 2026 season.
Doner played for Monterey Bay FC in the USL Championship’s Western Conference over the past three seasons. He joined them before their inaugural season in 2022 and consistently started all 34 league matches each year since his arrival. During his tenure at Monterey Bay, he played nearly every minute available, missing only 63 minutes throughout his time there.
Monterey Bay initially extended Doner's contract for two years after a successful first season in 2022. In November 2023, they further extended his contract through the end of the 2025 season, with an option for a third year into 2026.
Known as a fullback capable of contributing both defensively and offensively, Doner scored four league goals and provided ten assists during his time with Monterey Bay. Prior to joining the USL Championship, he spent three seasons playing in Canada’s Canadian Premier League (CPL) with HFX Wanderers FC and York9 between 2019 and 2021.
In total, Doner made 52 appearances in the CPL—32 for York9 and 20 for HFX Wanderers—accumulating nearly 5,000 minutes on the field before transitioning to play in the USL Championship.
