The Detroit Red Wings have assigned defenseman William Lagesson to the Grand Rapids Griffins, the team's affiliate in the American Hockey League. Lagesson, aged 28, has begun the 2024-25 season with five points and a plus-nine rating in 13 games for the Griffins.
Lagesson's previous season saw him split time between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Anaheim Ducks. During his tenure with Toronto, he recorded four assists and a plus-five rating over 30 games. With Anaheim, he accumulated 13 penalty minutes in ten appearances. In addition to his NHL experience last year, Lagesson contributed one assist in five games for the AHL's Toronto Marlies.
Originally drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in 2014, Lagesson has played across multiple NHL teams including Montréal Canadiens and Ducks. His career totals include 11 assists and a plus-two rating over 100 NHL games since debuting in the league during the 2019-20 season. In AHL play, he has amassed 77 points over stints with several teams including Bakersfield Condors and Chicago Wolves.
Before turning professional, Lagesson spent two seasons at UMass Amherst where he posted 15 points across 63 games. He also played for Dubuque Fighting Saints in USHL before moving to North America from Sweden’s Frölunda HC system.
Internationally, Lagesson represented Sweden at various junior levels including back-to-back IIHF World Junior Championships and won gold at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.
