Goalie prospect Sebastian Cossa has been recalled by the Detroit Red Wings from the Grand Rapids Griffins due to emergency conditions. Cossa, 22, was selected by the Red Wings as the 15th overall pick in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft. Since then, he has focused on developing his skills as a goaltender.
Cossa's recall comes after injuries to Cam Talbot and Alex Lyon, who are both dealing with lower-body injuries. Cossa will serve as backup goalie to Ville Husso for Detroit's game against the Boston Bruins at TD Garden.
"A dream come true," expressed Cossa after practicing with the team at Little Caesars Arena. He is looking forward to experiencing life on the road with his teammates.
Cossa shared that he immediately informed his parents of his NHL recall. "Everyone’s ecstatic," he said. The young goaltender emphasized how much hard work led up to this opportunity.
Detroit head coach Derek Lalonde noted that it remains uncertain whether Cossa will make his NHL debut during this recall. "We’ll get through [Tuesday] with Ville’s start and reevaluate where we are for Thursday [against the Ottawa Senators]," Lalonde stated.
In the current season with Grand Rapids, Cossa holds a record of 9-4-1 with a 2.21 goals-against average and a .925 save percentage over 14 games. Last season, he recorded 22 wins and two shutouts in 40 games.
Coach Lalonde praised Cossa's growth from last year to this year, describing it as positive progress. "I’m not surprised," Lalonde remarked regarding Cossa's performance.
Reflecting on his own journey, Ville Husso encouraged Cossa to enjoy his first time in the NHL and focus on playing hockey.
Other players in the Red Wings’ dressing room also offered words of encouragement to Cossa. He acknowledged their support: "It’s a dream come true."
