The Detroit Red Wings have recalled goaltender Sebastian Cossa from the Grand Rapids Griffins under emergency conditions. This decision follows the placement of goaltender Alex Lyon on injured reserve, effective retroactively to November 27.
Sebastian Cossa, aged 22, has started the 2024-25 season with a record of 9-4-1 in the American Hockey League (AHL), maintaining a goals-against average of 2.21 and a save percentage of .925 over 14 appearances with one shutout. Last season, he spent his time entirely with the Griffins, achieving a record of 22-9-9 and contributing two shutouts in regular-season games.
Cossa's professional journey began after being selected by the Red Wings as their first-round pick (15th overall) in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft. Over his AHL career with the Griffins, he has accumulated a record of 32-14-10. Additionally, during his time with the ECHL’s Toledo Walleye in the 2022-23 season, Cossa recorded four shutouts and represented his conference at the ECHL All-Star Game.
Before turning professional, Cossa played three seasons for the Edmonton Oil Kings in the Western Hockey League (WHL), where he was instrumental in securing a WHL championship for his team in 2022. He also achieved significant recognition during his youth hockey years with Fort Saskatchewan Rangers and internationally won gold with Team Canada at the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship.
