Whitmer acknowledges contributions on Black Entrepreneurs Day in Michigan

Today, Governor Gretchen Whitmer marked Black Entrepreneurs Day in Michigan, acknowledging the vital contributions of Black business owners to the state's economy. The celebration highlights their role in creating jobs and fostering innovation across various sectors.

Governor Whitmer stated, "Black entrepreneurs are a cornerstone of Michigan’s economy. Today, we honor their incredible contributions to move our state forward." She emphasized the importance of supporting these entrepreneurs by breaking down barriers and expanding access to capital.

Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist II added, "The minds and muscle of Black entrepreneurs have helped make Michigan a state of dreamers, doers, and innovators who get things done." As a Black entrepreneur himself, he spoke about the challenges faced by Black business owners and reiterated the commitment to building an equitable environment for all entrepreneurs.

Crystal Williams, President and CEO of Crystal Vision Communications, highlighted the economic impact of Black-owned businesses: "Black-owned businesses and entrepreneurs contribute to the economy by creating jobs within our communities while generating wealth for the next generation."

Tammy McCrory, founder of the McCrory Center, shared her journey into entrepreneurship with a focus on community health: "Entrepreneurship is important because it allows us to address unmet needs in our communities and drive positive change from the ground up."

Sylvester L. Hester from LM Manufacturing stressed that empowering underserved communities is crucial for economic growth. He noted that diverse leadership can transform opportunities in Michigan's workforce.

Debra J. White-Hunt from Detroit-Windsor Dance Academy expressed her views on entrepreneurship as a means to celebrate culture: "Being a Black entrepreneur is a blessing... Entrepreneurship allows me to care for my community."

Alfonzo Hall (AL), Group President at Wolverine Assemblies LLC, discussed his mission post-retirement from GM: "My passion is providing opportunity and developing generational wealth in minority communities."

Finally, Tamira Chapman from Storehouse In A Box highlighted how entrepreneurship creates opportunities: "It’s about creating opportunities for people to take control of their own futures."
