The Detroit Arsenal commemorated Women’s Equality Day on August 26, 2024, by hosting a discussion featuring prominent women leaders who shared insights on fostering inclusion and equity in the workplace.

Among the key speakers were Tammy Carnrike, Chief Operating Officer of the Detroit Regional Chamber and Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army; Wendy Saigh, TACOM Chief Legal Counsel; and moderator Carrie Mead from Detroit Arsenal Garrison.

When asked about the benefits of having women in leadership roles, both speakers emphasized that diverse voices enhance leadership quality. Saigh highlighted that diversity brings varied perspectives, while Carnrike pointed out that it contributes to a more versatile skill set beneficial for team growth and strategic direction.

Carnrike stressed the need for greater visibility of women's strengths and skills in the workplace. “It’s an area where we need much more attention,” she said. She underscored the importance of recognizing women by name when assigning tasks, offering promotions, establishing connections, and providing mentorship.

Saigh shared personal challenges related to overcoming insecurities and building confidence. She advised that practice over time and positive self-talk are crucial for overcoming these barriers. Carnrike recommended risk-taking as a means to build confidence: “Confidence comes from the risks you take … when you do something that goes beyond what you thought you could do.”

Regarding creating a more inclusive workforce, Carnrike praised her organization's equity and inclusion initiatives, noting significant progress through staff engagement. Saigh emphasized awareness and urged attendees to acknowledge diversity issues actively by observing their surroundings and questioning why certain disparities exist.

In closing remarks directed at their younger selves and future leaders, Carnrike advised maintaining composure under pressure: “not let them see you sweat.” Saigh encouraged self-compassion and risk-taking: “not to be so hard on yourself” while also stressing learning from decisions made.
