US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents seized multiple bags of fentanyl pills after a K9 alerted during the inspection of inbound international mail on June 2. This announcement came in a July 1 news release.
"I can tell you that the dangers of fentanyl cannot be overstated. According to the CDC, in 2023, there were over 100,000 drug overdose deaths, with synthetic opioids like fentanyl being the main contributors. Given that just 2 milligrams can be a lethal dose, this amount had the potential to kill over 1.3 million people," said Director of Field Operations Marty C. Raybon in the July 1 news release.
According to the news release, the multiple bags of plastic pills were identified through testing and seized. This seizure is the largest that the Port of Detroit has seen. It is also one of the largest inbound fentanyl seizures on the northern border in the last five years. This case is under investigation by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).
"One of CBP’s primary objectives is the prevention of dangerous narcotics such as fentanyl from entering the United States. I’m proud of Detroit's Express Consignment Team for their diligent inspection that led to the successful interception of this deadly drug," said Port Director Devin Chamberlain.
