Washington, D.C. – Congressman Shri Thanedar is pleased to announce the opening of the newly named Rosa Louise McCauley Parks Post Office Building opening in Michigan’s 13th Congressional District.
The renaming of the post office building located at 4744 Grand River Avenue in Detroit, Michigan, is in honor of the late Rosa Parks, the Mother of the Civil Rights Movement, who left a lasting mark on Detroit and the nation.
Rosa Parks was born in Tuskegee, Alabama, but spent much of her life in Detroit. She is most remembered as a Civil Rights Movement legend for refusing to give up her seat on a Montgomery, Alabama, bus in 1955. Her determination fueled the Montgomery Bus Boycott, which lasted over a year and ultimately culminated in the desegregation of public transportation in the United States.
On June 5, 2023, at 11:00 a.m., the post office building will hold a dedication ceremony to commemorate Rosa Parks and her legacy. The ceremony will feature a keynote address from a prominent civil rights activist and speeches from local community leaders.
Congressman Shri Thanedar notes that the renaming of the post office building in Rosa Parks' honor is a fitting tribute to a woman who made a lasting impact on Detroit and the country. "Rosa Parks was a true hero, and her courage and commitment to justice and equality continue to inspire us all," said Congressman Thanedar. "We are honored to pay tribute to her legacy by renaming this post office building in her honor, and we hope that it will serve as a reminder of her important contributions to our community and nation."
