Washington, D.C. – On National Maritime Day, Congressman Shri Thanedar proudly highlights Michigan's significant role in the American domestic maritime industry. Recent studies underscore Michigan's economic impact, job creation, and thriving shipyard industry, positioning the state among the top 20 in the nation.

According to a PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) study for the Transportation Institute, Michigan shines as a vital domestic maritime state, boasting 12,140 jobs within the industry throughout the state. This ranking solidifies Michigan's place among the top 20 states in the nation for domestic maritime employment, underscoring the state's importance in supporting the American maritime sector. 

Michigan’s 13th Congressional District, encompasses 1,030 Jones Act jobs. These jobs involve vessel construction, maintenance, repair, shore-side management, trade support, and crewing. They contribute approximately $70 million in labor income and generate an economic impact of $269 million annually within the district.

Domestic maritime activities in Michigan generate a significant amount of labor income, estimated at $703.6 million per year. This financial growth has a huge impact on local communities, stimulating economic growth and creating job possibilities.

The total economic impact generated by Michigan's domestic maritime sector is an impressive figure exceeding $2.8 billion annually. This remarkable contribution further solidifies Michigan's position as a key driver of economic activity within the industry, positively impacting the state's economy and its residents.

The U.S. Maritime Administration's recent study on shipbuilding, covering commercial and military ship construction, reveals Michigan's shipyard industry's remarkable performance. The study reports an annual shipyard economic impact of over $492 million, with worker income amounting to more than $317 million. Notably, shipyard jobs in Michigan provide salaries approximately 45% higher than the national average for private-sector employment, ensuring the prosperity and well-being of maritime professionals within the state.

Nationally, the domestic maritime industry plays a crucial role in the American economy, employing over 648,220 individuals and contributing $41.6 billion in labor compensation. With an economic output reaching $154.8 billion and tax contributions totaling $16.8 billion, the industry showcases its significant influence on the nation's economic growth and stability. Moreover, the United States boasts one of the world's largest domestic fleets, comprising over 40,000 vessels.
