Ron Weiser was elected chair of the Michigan Republican Party today during a virtual convention by a landslide against incumbent Laura Cox.
Weiser, a businessman and member of the University of Michigan Board of Regents, won the statewide election for the third time since 2009. He and Meshawn Maddox won with over 66% of the vote.
Cox attempted to smear Weiser just two days ahead of the election through an email to delegates. In her email, she accused Weiser of paying former Secretary of State candidate Stanley Grot to step out of the primary race.
"Meshawn and I are honored and excited to lead the party over the next two critical years,” Weiser said in a statement release by the Michigan GOP. “The skirmishes of yesterday are over. Our focus now rests on the great challenges before us: Rebuilding our party. Defeating Whitmer, Nessel, Benson and other far-left radicals.”
Cox tweeted that she wouldn’t stop fighting for conservative values.
“It has been an honor to serve as Michigan GOP Chairman these last two years. While I'm no longer leading the party, I will NEVER stop fighting for our conservative principles and what we stand for,” Cox said via Twitter after the results were released.
