A Pure Michigan tourism campaign is scheduled to begin this month, launched by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.

However, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer recommended against travel for Michiganders during the upcoming holiday season.

“We all know the next two months are going to be hard,” Whitmer said at her press conference, according to Michigan Capitol Confidential. “Too many people traveled for Thanksgiving, and we will see our numbers increase very likely because of it. And that’ll coincide with the next big holiday, Christmas, and too many people are considering traveling. And I’m reiterating, please don’t. About four weeks after that, we will see the impact of that.”

Pure Michigan is a government marketing program that leverages the tourism industry at the expense of taxpayers. The authorization of $15 million for the 2020 fiscal year came from the Michigan Legislature.

Whitmer has been governor of Michigan since 2019, and she previously served in the House of Representatives from 2001 to 2006 and the Michigan Senate from 2006 to 2015.
