Joe Biden's opposition to federal funding going to for-profit charter schools has many Catholic parents concerned with his views on school choice programs.
“Parents are demanding more choices today as their schools across the country are not serving them and the needs of their students,” Education Secretary Betsy DeVos told Fox News. “So the demand for school choice and giving parents the control for their kids' future is continuing to grow. And it's a really important point in time.”
Rosemarie Denton, an activist and grandmother in the Detroit area, has a grandson enrolled in Catholic school. She is grateful he is able to attend a school of choice, just like her children did. Denton also attended Catholic school as a child.
"I'm just like, give thanks every day that he's back in the Catholic school," Denton told Detroit City Wire.
Denton said parents should have the option to send their kids to Catholic school, or a school of choice. But she also feels the price to have your child attend a private or Catholic school can be ridiculous.
"But at the same time, I get a little hesitant when I started thinking about the government having a role in that, because then they can dictate," she said. "So I have some mixed feelings on credit and all. I don't know enough about it. I know it sounds good on the surface. So I'm not as educated as I should be in that area."
Sending children to Catholic school is a big financial sacrifice for many families. Denton said both she and her parents sacrificed a lot to send their kids to Catholic school. Now her daughter is making a sacrifice to send her son to Catholic school in Chicago where they live.
While Denton said she wouldn't oppose a presidential candidate based on their stance on school choice, she said she does oppose Biden because of foundational issues such as sanctity of life.
"I don't support Joe Biden in any fashion," she told Detroit City Wire. "He is a disaster when it comes to the sanctity of life and that's foundational."
Denton said she hopes people use their conscience when voting this November and prays that President Donald Trump will win the election.
"I just hope people realize how important it is to vote and to have a well formed conscience, because if our president change, I think Western civilization as we know it and the freedoms that we enjoy will be chipped away and this will become a country that we don't even recognize," Denton told Detroit City Wire.
