Tree

City of Detroit issued the following announcement.

WHAT: The City of Detroit and Councilmember Scott Benson will celebrate renovations at Village Park, during a ribbon cutting ceremony Saturday, Sept. 26. Formerly named Georgia Fischer Park, Village Park is the first new park in an underserved area near the city’s Industrial Park district in nearly 30 years. The park is a direct result of community demand for recreational resources in the area. The park will not only serve community residents, but students at A.L. Holmes Elementary School to ensure they have a new playscape and park to enjoy.

The ceremony will highlight $250,000 in upgrades and improvements to the 1.13-acre park. Upgrades include a 1,100-foot long walking loop, a 2,500-square-foot playscape for children, basketball courts, benches, and newly planted trees.

The ribbon cutting celebration will feature a community dedication with African dance and drum ceremony by members of the Alkebu-Lan Village, words from Mayor Mike Duggan, Councilmember Benson, DPSCD School Board Member Sonya Mays, A.L. Holmes Principal Tammy Mitchell, and other community members.
