Detroit Public Schools Community District issued the following announcement.
DPSCD is prepared to welcome back students when school reopens on Tuesday, September 8. The District’s strong reopening plan provides for the health and safety of students, teachers, and staff while meeting families where they are with face to face and online learning options yet being nimble to adopt to new or changing circumstances.
By incorporating feedback from more than 25,000 parents and community members through a variety of online and in-person engagement sessions earlier this summer, as well as getting input from our teachers and staff, the District is introducing Learning Centers as a third option to help meet families and students where they are during this difficult time as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In short, Learning Centers are online learning in a school-based setting from certified teachers. In addition to receiving live, daily online instruction, students participating in Learning Centers will receive breakfast and lunch as well as benefitting from the same safety protocols for those students who are doing face to face learning often in the same school building. The Learning Centers option honors District parents’ decision for in-person learning for their children while also respecting the decision of some of our teachers, who prefer to work remotely at this time.
Along with getting breakfast and lunch, District Learning Centers school hours will be the same as a regular school day as well as have internet and device access, recess and opportunities for safe socialization, a critical element of an in-person experience. And, parents and families faced with work related conflicts that prohibits them from monitoring their children during online learning, can be at ease knowing that their student is getting a quality, free public education while they are at work.
