Detroit Public Schools Community District issued the following announcement.
The DPS non-homestead millage renewal on the August 4, 2020 ballot will provide funds for Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD).
The non-homestead operating millage renewal applies to owners of business properties (businesses) as well as those who own rental properties or vacation homes. It is important to note: a homeowners’ property tax will not be impacted by passing the renewal of non-homestead operating millage.
Under the thoughtful and steady leadership of the elected DPSCD Board of Education as well as Superintendent Dr. Nikolai Vitti, DPSCD continues to demonstrate a strong record of financial stewardship. The budget is balanced. Reserve funds are growing. Audits are clean. Investments are being made in teacher pay. Transparency and accountability are practiced. Visibility is maintained with information available on the District’s website.
In the classroom, enrollment is growing for the first time in decades (currently at 51,000 students). Student achievement, as defined by test scores, is moving in a positive direction. And, grade level proficiency for math and reading have increased at a faster rate than any other school district in the state. In addition, much needed improvements in technology as well as vital wraparound services supporting our students physical and emotional health are available, adding to the District’s Whole Child Commitment priority.
“The strength of our community is directly related to the strength of our public education system,” said Dr. Vitti, during a Tele-Town Hall meeting on Thursday (7-23-20).
