City of Detroit issued the following announcement on June 2.
Detroit is a city imbued with the beauty, spirit, and resilience of Black life, Black people, and Black culture.
Today, our Black community is grieving.
We, Detroiters of all races and backgrounds, grieve with you. We stand together in mourning not only this loss but also the many losses that reignite this trauma time and time again. Your anger, despair, and frustration is just in the face of injustice.
Without Black life, there is no Detroit life.
