Join us for a free virtual book club! We're reading I'm Telling the Truth, but I'm Lying

Detroit Public Library is partnering with the All of Us Research Program at Wayne State University’s Shiffman Medical Library on a free virtual book club beginning on June 3. We will be reading I’m Telling the Truth, but I’m Lying by Bassey Ikpi . Bassey is a Nigerian American writer who details her experiences with bipolar II and the ways it has shaped her life and her experiences.

This free book club is designed for adult readers. The author explores mental health, coping mechanisms, substance use, relationships, and self-deprecation and self-love. A content note: this book contains subject matter on suicidal ideation, sex and romance, instances of mania, and disordered eating.

This book club will be both online in a discussion forum on Goodreads, as well as a few face-to-face video chats which people can call into. Participants can choose to participate in either or both of the book club formats. The book is available for free on Hoopla as both an eBook and an audio book, which the author reads herself.

Hoopla is a service provided by many public libraries that allows patrons to check out ebooks and audio books using their library card information. All you need to do is sign up for Hoopla using your library card information and home library and start browsing!

You don't need a library card to join us! But if you're a Detroit resident or a student in Detroit and need assistance signing up for a library card or checking out a book from Hoopla , please email ask-a-librarian@detroitpubliclibrary.org
