Goalie prospect Trey Augustine agreed to a three-year, entry-level contract with the Detroit Red Wings on Apr. 1, moving closer to his goal of playing for his hometown National Hockey League team. The deal will begin in the 2026-27 season, while Augustine will join the Grand Rapids Griffins on an amateur tryout for the rest of the current campaign.

Augustine said this step is significant as he has been a lifelong fan of the Red Wings. “I’ve been a Red Wings fan my entire life, and truly a dream come true. I’m super excited for the future and for many years to come here,” Augustine said.

A native of South Lyon, Michigan, Augustine reflected on his successful collegiate career at Michigan State University, where he posted a 66-25-7 record over three seasons and helped win multiple Big Ten titles. “I just love Michigan State so much,” Augustine said. “Everything about it has been perfect for me. The fans, the staff, my teammates – really just everyone involved made it such a special place.”

Augustine was named Big Ten goaltender of the year twice and was recognized as a finalist for both the Hobey Baker Memorial Award and Mike Richter Award in 2026. He credited Spartans head coach Adam Nightingale with helping him develop important habits that he plans to carry into professional hockey: “Nighty’s been the best…He’s also been very honest…I think having someone like that in your corner really helps.”

The Detroit Red Wings represent Detroit, Michigan according to their official website. They host games in downtown Detroit according to their official website and operate as one of the Original Six teams in the National Hockey League according to their official website. The franchise has won 11 Stanley Cup championships according to their official website and is regarded as one of top-performing American teams in league history according to their official website.

Looking ahead at joining Grand Rapids before transitioning full-time into professional hockey next season, Augustine said: “The AHL is tough and it’s going to be hard, but I’ve been preparing for this my entire life it seems. I’m going to be ready and going to do whatever I can to have success.” He also thanked his family: “So many sacrifices they’ve made for me…just thankful to have them as my parents.”
