Detroit City FC and Charleston Battery played to a 1-1 draw on Saturday night in Charleston, South Carolina. The match remained scoreless through the first half, with both teams' defenses holding firm despite Charleston having more possession.
Charleston’s MD Myers received a yellow card early in the fifth minute for a foul on Detroit’s Michael Bryant. Detroit’s Ryan Williams was also shown a yellow card in the 26th minute. Detroit’s best opportunity before halftime came in the 37th minute when Ates Diouf took a free kick from about 25 yards out, narrowly missing the near post.
At halftime, Detroit made one substitution, bringing on Jeciel Cedeño for Sebastian Guenzatti. Early in the second half, Haruki Yamazaki forced a save from Charleston’s goalkeeper after pressuring the back line during a goal kick. Devon Amoo-Mensah received Detroit’s second yellow card of the match in the 58th minute.
The scoring began in the 65th minute when Charleston capitalized on a corner kick that Detroit struggled to clear. The ball fell to MD Myers, who scored to give Charleston a 1-0 lead. However, Detroit responded quickly. Ryan Williams initiated an attack and passed to Jay Chapman, who set up Ates Diouf at the top of the box. Diouf scored with a one-touch shot to tie the game at 1-1.
Jay Chapman recorded his third assist of the USL Championship season with this play, making him Detroit City FC's assist leader for the year.
Head Coach Danny Dichio made further substitutions late in the match: Jordan Adebayo-Smith replaced Ates Diouf in the 78th minute and Stephen Carroll came on for Haruki Yamazaki in the 88th minute.
After five minutes of stoppage time, neither team found another goal and the match ended level. According to club officials, “For Detroit City, it’s a massive point in the race to clinch the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Detroit can secure their playoff ticket with a win next week at Tampa Bay Rowdies.”
