The Detroit Red Wings have secured forward John Leonard with a one-year contract, valued at $775,000 annually. Leonard, 26, played the 2024-25 season with the American Hockey League’s Charlotte Checkers. During this time, he achieved team-leading statistics including 36 goals and 61 points in 72 regular-season games. His performance earned him a spot at the AHL All-Star Classic and recognition on the AHL's Second All-Star Team.

Leonard contributed significantly to the Checkers' postseason run to the Calder Cup Finals with 14 points over 18 games. In previous seasons, he has split his time between NHL teams such as the Arizona Coyotes and AHL affiliates like Tucson Roadrunners.

Originally drafted by the San Jose Sharks in 2018, Leonard has accumulated experience across several teams including Nashville Predators and Coyotes, totaling 17 points in 70 NHL games since debuting in the league.

Before turning professional, Leonard played for three years at the University of Massachusetts where he earned accolades such as First Team All-American after leading NCAA goal scores during his junior year. His career began with Springfield Cathedral High and Green Bay Gamblers before representing Team USA internationally.
