The Grand Rapids Griffins' 2024-25 season concluded with a defeat in the Central Division Semifinals of the Calder Cup Playoffs. The Texas Stars completed a three-game sweep against the Detroit Red Wings’ American Hockey League affiliate, marking an end to their campaign.
Head coach Dan Watson reflected on the season, highlighting the growth and experience gained by several young prospects. “We started the regular season off really strong, then ran into some injury issues and callups [to Detroit],” Watson told DetroitRedWings.com. He emphasized that roster changes provided younger players with opportunities to play significant minutes, aiding their development.
Under Watson's leadership, the Griffins reached the Calder Cup Playoffs for a second consecutive year, finishing third in the Central Division with a record of 37-29-4-2. Watson became only the sixth head coach in franchise history to qualify for postseason play in his first two full seasons.
Reflecting on his time with the team, Watson stated: “It’s been great... All the relationships you build, the way you talk to people, the way you manage people and help people – that’s all part of natural progression.”
Watson also praised assistant coaches Steph Julien and Brian Lashoff and goaltending development coach Roope Koistinen for their contributions during their second full campaigns. “It’s important to have those guys around,” he said.
The focus on player development was evident as forward prospect Michael Brandsegg-Nygård and defense prospect Axel Sandin-Pellikka joined from Skellefteå AIK. "A lot of transition for them coming right in," Watson noted about adapting to new playing conditions.
Looking ahead to summer preparations, Watson aims to strengthen ties with Red Wings head coach Todd McLellan. “We want to ensure we understand what [McLellan] wants and expects from us as a staff,” said Watson. This collaboration may involve working on projects like planning for next year's Training Camp.
