Detroit City Football Club is set to participate in the 2025 edition of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup, beginning with a Third Round match against USL League One's Westchester SC. The game will commence at 7 p.m. at Keyworth Stadium and will be streamed live on Paramount+.
Detroit City, also known as Le Rouge, recently pulled off a remarkable comeback, scoring three goals in the last five minutes to defeat Phoenix Rising FC 3-2. Key contributions came from Rhys Williams, whose two assists to Darren Smith tied the game. Jeciel Cedeño scored the decisive goal in the 90th minute, ensuring a victory for Detroit City.
The club is marking its eighth appearance in the US Open Cup this year. In the previous season, Detroit City reached the Round of 16, its best performance in the tournament. They achieved a 1-0 win in the third round against Michigan Stars before facing Houston Dynamo FC in the Round of 32. Detroit City managed to rally from a 2-0 deficit, equalizing with a goal from Maxi Rodriguez, and eventually won 10-9 in a penalty shootout. However, their progress was halted in the Round of 16 by Indy Eleven.
Historically, two teams from Detroit have reached the US Open Cup Final: Holley Carburetor FC, which lost in 1927, and Detroit Chrysler FC, which was defeated in 1941.
Westchester SC, a new club currently 1-1-1 in the USL League One, has already played two matches in the US Open Cup. They began by defeating FC Motown 1-0 and then won against New York Pancyprian-Freedoms 3-2 in the Second Round.
Following their US Open Cup game, Detroit City will host an Eastern Conference match against Rhode Island FC at Keyworth Stadium, with kickoff scheduled for 4 p.m. Tickets are available at www.detcityfc.com/tickets.
