Red Wings send Brandsegg-Nygård and Sandin-Pellikka to Grand Rapids from Skellefteå AIK

The Detroit Red Wings have reassigned Michael Brandsegg-Nygård and Axel Sandin-Pellikka to the Grand Rapids Griffins from Skellefteå AIK of the Swedish Hockey League. Michael Brandsegg-Nygård, at 19, recorded 11 points and 51 penalty minutes in 42 games for Skellefteå AIK during the 2024-25 season. Brandsegg-Nygård also registered six points in 11 postseason games. Attending Detroit’s training camp before the current season, he had three points in five preseason games. His history in professional hockey began at 16 with Vålerenga in Norway’s top league. Notably, he was the first Norwegian-born player picked in the first round of the NHL Entry Draft by the Red Wings in 2024. Internationally, Brandsegg-Nygård won a bronze medal with Norway at the 2025 IIHF World Junior Championship Division I and represented Norway at the 2024 IIHF World Championship. Axel Sandin-Pellikka, at 20, was named Swedish Junior Hockey Player of the Year, earning 29 points and 22 penalty minutes in 46 games with Skellefteå AIK for the 2024-25 season. His postseason included eight points in 11 games. During the 2023-24 season, he helped Skellefteå AIK win the SHL championship. Sandin-Pellikka, selected by the Red Wings in the first round of the 2023 NHL Entry Draft, started his professional journey with Skellefteå AIK in the 2022-23 season. Internationally, representing Sweden, he was recognized as the tournament’s best defenseman at the 2025 IIHF World Junior Championship for the second consecutive year. He also earned a silver medal at the 2024 IIHF World Junior Championship.
