State Representatives Josh Schriver and Luke Meerman have reached out to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) Director Elizabeth Hertel with a request for detailed information concerning the verification of lawful immigration status among recipients of state benefits. This inquiry aims to ensure that taxpayer resources are distributed in accordance with legal requirements.
The representatives, Schriver from Oxford and Meerman from Coopersville, are seeking answers to several questions related to the administration of benefits such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Medicaid. Their letter raises concerns about residents who may be receiving these benefits without providing proof of citizenship.
Key questions posed by the representatives include: "How many residents unable to provide proof of citizenship are currently receiving benefits under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Medicaid?" They also inquire about whether MDHHS workers are mandated to verify an applicant's lawful immigration status through state or federal databases before issuing benefits, as well as how often this requirement is monitored for compliance.
Additionally, they ask: "What specific screening measures does MDHHS use to verify the lawful immigration status of applicants before the administration of benefits?" The letter requests any training materials or guidance used by MDHHS in instructing workers on these procedures.
Further, they seek information on "the total estimated cost to taxpayers per year" if noncitizens are currently receiving SNAP and Medicaid benefits. They also request a breakdown of this financial impact within the department’s budget.
The letter concludes with a request for detailed protocols followed by MDHHS when screening applicants for eligibility, including steps taken to prevent fraudulent claims. A written response is requested by March 26, 2025. The representatives express their willingness to discuss the matter further if needed and have provided contact details for any necessary clarifications.
