Both Craig Smith and Petr Mrazek have joined the Detroit Red Wings following a trade from the Chicago Blackhawks. The move, finalized before the 2025 NHL Trade Deadline, sees Smith and goalie Mrazek joining a team striving for a Stanley Cup Playoffs spot.

Smith expressed enthusiasm about playing significant games. "Playing games that are meaningful, that’s all you can ask for," he said after practice at Little Caesars Arena’s BELFOR Training Center. He noted the urgency in the team's atmosphere and his desire to contribute.

In exchange for Smith and Mrazek, the Red Wings traded Joe Veleno to the Blackhawks. Head coach Todd McLellan had individual discussions with both new players, emphasizing different points due to their roles.

"The one that needed to be laid out a lot more was three goaltenders," McLellan stated. "Only two dress for a game." He acknowledged that while they haven't seen Mrazek play yet, there is strong belief in his abilities alongside Cam Talbot and Alex Lyon.

McLellan also addressed Smith's personal adjustments. "[Smith] has got his life in order... we got to make sure [he] is comfortable and focused on playing."

Mrazek returns to Detroit after initially being drafted by them in 2010. Reflecting on his trade back to Detroit, he shared his excitement: "The last 20 games are always the most exciting part of the season."

Smith echoed similar sentiments regarding his unexpected trade but welcomed it positively: "I was grateful... This is a great organization."

This season with Chicago, Smith recorded 16 points across 40 games. McLellan praised Smith's skating ability and experience: "He still looks like he’s skating real well... I encouraged him to share [his experience] with the group."

McLellan believes these additions will benefit the team significantly: "It should give us a jolt... These guys are legit, and they’ve played some good hockey."
