Albert Johansson, a rookie defenseman for the Detroit Red Wings, is establishing his presence on the team by taking on more responsibilities. With an average ice time of 15:48 over 34 games this season, Johansson's role has expanded since December 27, now averaging 18:34 per game. This change comes as he steps in to fill the gap left by Jeff Petry's absence due to an undisclosed injury.
Johansson appreciates the opportunity he's been given. "I just try to take advantage of that opportunity every day," he said. He credits playing alongside Simon Edvinsson for helping him adjust. "It obviously helps to play with Simon [Edvinsson]. We’ve played before in Grand Rapids, so we know each other on the ice."
Red Wings head coach Todd McLellan acknowledged Johansson's unexpected rise within the team. "I knew nothing about Albert," McLellan stated. "We get here and he’s kind of parked on the shelf... I think his rise has been remarkable." McLellan praised Johansson's performance across all three zones and noted his competitive nature during physical encounters.
Despite being smaller than many opponents at 6-foot and 185 pounds, Johansson relies on his skating and puck-moving abilities. "I’m probably not going to run guys over," he explained. Instead, he focuses on positioning and stick work to influence play.
Drafted in the second round (60th overall) of the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, Johansson finds comfort playing with Edvinsson and other Swedish teammates in Detroit. "For us Swedish guys, moving over from Sweden isn’t easy," Johansson said, emphasizing their strong off-ice relationships which translate into better teamwork during games.
Looking ahead to a break in February for the 2025 4 Nations Face-Off Break, Johansson anticipates some rest before returning to action on February 22. “It’s nice to get a couple days off... You can reset your mind,” said Johansson, who has contributed five points this season with one goal and four assists.
