The Detroit Red Wings extended their winning streak to seven games with a 5-4 shootout victory over the Seattle Kraken at Climate Pledge Arena. This win marks a season-high eight-game point streak for the team.
Moritz Seider, who scored a goal and played his 300th NHL game, credited head coach Todd McLellan for sparking the team's success. "Ever since Todd [McLellan] came in, I think we just proved that we’re a good hockey team," said Seider.
Goalie Cam Talbot contributed significantly by making 23 saves and stopping all three shootout attempts. The Red Wings' record now stands at 28-21-5 with 61 points. Meanwhile, Seattle's Joey Daccord made 36 saves in the loss.
“The spirit and the belief system have gone up,” McLellan stated about his team's improved performance since he took over as coach.
Detroit's top line of Marco Kasper, Dylan Larkin, and Lucas Raymond initiated scoring early in the first period. Raymond’s goal tied him with Marcel Dionne for third-most goals among franchise skaters aged 22 or younger.
Seattle responded with Matty Beniers scoring off Kaapo Kakko’s feed to tie it up before Seider's power-play goal put Detroit ahead again. Jonatan Berggren and Elmer Soderblom added goals for Detroit in subsequent periods.
Shane Wright scored twice for Seattle, while Chandler Stephenson also found the net to force overtime. In the shootout, Patrick Kane secured victory with his record-breaking 53rd career NHL shootout goal.
Reflecting on special teams' impact on the game, McLellan said: “Tonight, it was about special teams... Everybody chipped in.”
Seider acknowledged Seattle's home advantage but praised his team's composure: “We knew it wasn’t going to be easy... We just stayed with it.”
The Red Wings will next face Tampa Bay Lightning at Little Caesars Arena before heading into the NHL’s 4 Nations Face-Off break.
