Detroit City Football Club has announced the acquisition of Canadian midfielder Jay Chapman from Hartford Athletic. Chapman has signed a new deal with Detroit City, which will see him playing for the team in the 2025 USL Championship season.
Chapman, originally from Brampton, Ontario, played for Hartford Athletic and Charleston Battery during the 2024 season. He appeared in 17 matches for Hartford before being loaned to Charleston in August, where he participated in 15 games and helped lead the team to the Eastern Conference Finals.
Prior to his time at Hartford, Chapman was part of the Colorado Springs Switchbacks in 2023. He played 28 out of 34 possible games that season and scored his first USL Championship goal against Monterey Bay FC on August 26th.
In January 2022, Chapman joined Dundee FC in Scotland's Premiership but only made two appearances before leaving by mutual consent due to paperwork issues affecting his status for the following season.
Before moving to Europe, Chapman spent seven years in Major League Soccer (MLS). He played two seasons with Inter Miami CF between 2020 and 2021, participating in a total of 33 games. Prior to that, he spent five seasons with Toronto FC and their USL side Toronto FC II. Over those five years, he played a combined total of 103 games for both clubs. During his time with Toronto FC's MLS team, they won three Canadian Cups, one Supporters Shield, and the MLS Cup in 2017. Additionally, Chapman featured briefly in the CONCACAF Champions League Final second leg against Chivas Guadalajara.
