The Detroit Red Wings extended their winning streak to six games with a 3-2 overtime victory against the Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Arena. The win secured the team’s position in the Eastern Conference's first Wild-Card spot.
Alex DeBrincat, who scored twice including the game-winning goal in overtime, remarked on the team's determination: “I think we have a lot of resilience in this room... Needed to just battle through it, and it’s good to get the two points.”
Goalie Alex Lyon made 25 saves for Detroit, while Vancouver's Kevin Kankinen stopped 14 shots. Detroit coach Todd McLellan praised his team’s perseverance: “I give the guys a lot of credit for showing some character... It wasn’t real pretty, but we found a way to scrap out a game.”
Vancouver took an early lead when Pius Suter deflected Elias Pettersson’s shot into the net. Detroit responded quickly with DeBrincat tying the game shortly after. Ben Chiarot gave Detroit a 2-1 lead with his third goal of the season, assisted by Jonatan Berggren and Elmer Soderblom.
McLellan highlighted how younger players are positively impacting veterans: “The youth has invigorated the older players... It’s a real good mix right now.” Filip Chytil tied the game for Vancouver late in regulation before DeBrincat sealed victory in overtime.
DeBrincat noted reaching personal milestones during this match: "Their guy got lost in our zone when we picked it up... I gave it to him and he made a great play back to me." Patrick Kane expressed satisfaction despite challenges faced: “We knew it was going to be a little bit of a grind... You need wins like that when you’re not at your best.”
Detroit will aim to complete its four-game road trip sweep against Seattle Kraken next.
